Introducing the Protostar Quilt

I’m back with a new quilt pattern! I’ve been on a bit of a hiatus from working on quilt patterns for the past 6 months, but I have been dreaming of quilt designs, colour combinations, and stitch patterns. I am so excited to be back with a new design to share! Introducing Protostar!

Protostar is on sale this week for 25% off along with all of our other patterns, no code required!

About Protostar

The Protostar Quilt is the ultimate baby quilt! This design works beautifully with Fat Quarters or yardage. It comes with three unique colour options: Make a playful multicolour quilt, a modern three-colour quilt, or a classic two-colour quilt.

A 'protostar' is a baby star! One that is still growing into its final star form. The Protostar Quilt is a lovely gift for expecting parents or young ones in your life. This quilt offers the opportunity to use fun fabrics or even fussy cut elements like the squares in the border around the outside edge.

At 39" square, this quilt is the perfect size for a baby quilt, pet quilt, or a larger wall hanging.

The Inspiration

I’ve got several people in my life having babies at the moment, and naturally I want to make each new baby a special quilt. I think making a quilt for a newborn is one of the best quilt projects! It’s small, it’s cute, and you know it will be treasured! It couldn't be more perfect. It’s also a really nice gift to offer the parents-to-be. They are always really appreciative because it feels meaningful and it’s a unique gift.

I designed this quilt as the ultimate baby quilt. There are lots of baby quilt designs out there, including baby sizes for all of our other quilt designs, but it was nice to design something specifically for this project.

The large square border is perfect for fun fussy-cut elements that the baby can look at as it grows. The star in the middle feels like the ideal place to plop your little one down for tummy time. The size is ideal for a baby quilt because it can be folded on the back of a nursing chair, or it can be placed on the floor for a play mat.

The name “Protostar” means a baby star that is still forming. I like how that is reflected in the star design with all the triangles surrounding it! It feels symbolic of growth and new beginnings.

Sizes and Fabric Requirements

Protostar comes in one size - the baby size! It is 39” square. It’s also a great size for a wall hanging, a pet quilt, or a mini quilt for decorating the back of a couch.

This quilt design comes with three colour options. You can use many different fabrics to make a multicolour quilt. You can choose to make a modern three-colour quilt. And last but not least, you can keep it classic with a two-colour quilt.

The world is your oyster with Protostar! With the three colour options and the ability to choose multiple fabrics for the multicolour quilt, you can really do so many different combinations. Protostar looks cool with a light or a dark background, too!

Construction

Protostar is an ideal quilt for beginners. It uses the mighty Half-Square-Triangle (HST) which is one of the building blocks of quilting. I love how this simple shape can create so many designs! In addition to HSTs there is a border made up of simple squares.

I think Protostar is a really fun quilt to sew because:

  • It’s small and approachable
  • It comes together really fast
  • You can use lots of fun fabrics for the multicolour version
  • It has a variety of piecing (HSTs and Squares)

The Quilting

The Protostar samples were pieced by Helen Wilkinson (designer and founder of Cedar Quilt Co.). The multicolour sample was free motion quilted by Malinda Crouch. The three-colour sample was quilted by Helen.
