About Market Stalls
Market Stalls is a fun and colourful quilting adventure! This pattern was designed with fat quarters in mind, so you can mix and match lots of fun fabrics into one beautiful quilt. Quarter yard or half yard cuts also work well.
Market Stalls is suitable for adventurous beginners. It is a great quilt for learning basic block elements because it includes a large variety and the pieces are on the larger side. It does however include many intersecting points and seams. Trimming all the block elements to size is key to success with Market Stalls.
The Inspiration
This quilt is inspired by the amazing sights and sounds of a craft marketplace. It captures how giddy and excited I feel to shop the different vendors and explore a wonderful world of creativity. Each block has six different fabrics that work together to create a burst of inspiration! I love to bounce from one stall to the next, taking in the incredible work and the joy that comes from making.
Fat Quarters
If you are new to quilting, ‘Fat Quarter’ might be an unfamiliar term for you. A Fat Quarter is a half yard piece of fabric that has been cut in half along the lengthwise grain. It is the same amount of fabric as a ¼ yard cut, but it is cut ‘fat’. Fat Quarters are popular in quilting because you can cut larger pieces from them and you get to see more of the print (if applicable).

There are lots of patterns out there that cater to Fat Quarters and Market Stalls is one of them! Quilters often buy fat quarters in bundles so they get a cohesive group of fabrics to work with. These bundles are tyoically all from the same fabric collection or they are custom picked by a designer or fabric store owner. Buying this way helps to take the guesswork out of choosing fabric for your project.

One of the best things about working with fat quarters is the variety of fabrics that you get to play with! If you are making a quilt using just a few fabrics, it can get a bit monotonous. Making a quilt that uses many different fabrics is exciting! You can combine the fabrics in different ways to get fun results. Each block is a unique sewing experience and that can help you to stay motivated to finish your quilt.
Sizes and Fabric Requirements
I have provided four sizes for Market Stalls; baby, throw, twin, and bed size. I made the throw size for the cover quilt which uses 12 Fat Quarters / ¼ yard cuts. You will need 6 - 30 FQs depending ont he size you choose. Half yard cuts are also an option for the throw, twin, and bed sizes.
FQs or ¼ yard cuts will result in a lot of variety in your blocks. Each block features 6 different fabrics (not including the background) and they will all be different. Half yard cuts will result in less variety in the quilt, but for the two larger sizes, it can make the quilt more cohesive.
If you are feeling intimidated by choosing so many different fabrics, I highly recommend getting a FQ or HY fabric bundle. This will ensure a cohesive look. You can also copy our cover quilts!
Colour Examples
Market Stalls is an easy quilt to make look good. Pretty much any bundle of fabric paired with a neutral background fabric is going to shine. Here are a few examples including earth tones, monochromatic, and pastels.
Construction
This pattern has a nice variety in the piecing including half square triangles, flying geese, and square-in-a-square elements. Once all the elements are ready, groups of fabrics are made so that each block has 6 unique fabrics included. I love that Market Stalls has prominent square in a square units surrounded by smaller piecing that almost creates a shimmering effect.
I think Market Stalls is a really fun quilt to sew because:
- It has lots of different elements in each block so it doesnt get tedious.
- You get to play with loads of fun fabrics.
- You can’t mess up the combinations of fabrics because there is background fabric around every element.
- The blocks are large (15”) so bigger scale prints and wovens work really well.
- Quilting really shines on this design thanks to the larger scale.
The Quilting
Thanks to Shelly over at Ma Tante quilting for longarming the cover quilt. I chose “Baptist Clam” for the pantograph and I’m thrilled with how it looks. I wanted a curved line to break up all the angles in the piecing so this one was perfect. I love how it evokes the feeling of being in a market place and bouncing from one stall to the next.
The background fabric is a Kaffe Fassett print called “Carpet Cookies” (sky). I was so happy when I found this print because it includes all the same colours I chose for the piecing. It also reminds me of markets and craft fairs. What a perfect combination!
