ABOUT BOXLINK

Boxlink is a beginner-friendly quilt pattern that is inspired by weaving. This quilt is a feast for the eyes that is simple and fun to make! Choose bold colours or calm neutrals; Boxlink works well with any palette.

The Boxlink blocks are created using strip piecing, a quick and efficient way to work on multiple blocks at once. The blocks can be laid out in matching horizontal rows or placed randomly (as shown in the cover quilt). It comes in 5 sizes, from baby to bed (38" - 86").

Boxlink works well with FQ or HY bundles! The baby and lap sizes of Boxlink are Fat Quarter friendly, and the larger sizes (small throw, large throw, bed) use half yard cuts.

SKILL LEVEL

Boxlink is a great pattern for beginner quilters. Maybe not for the very first quilt ever, but certainly as a subsequent quilt.  It is just complex enough to push the boundaries of your quilting while still learning lots and ending up with a beautiful finished quilt. Boxlink uses strip piecing which is a really fun method of construction and a great skill to build.

There are no intersecting seams on the Boxlink block so it is really easy to assemble! It takes the pressure off. All the pieces are squares or rectangles, too. For a more experienced quilter, Boxlink is a quick and easy project. Perfect for when you are craving something simple and satisfying!

I love how many sizes are included in this pattern! The large throw size is so nice and big and cozy. The small throw size makes a great accent blanket for a couch or chair. The lap size and the baby size are really fast and totally do-able for a beginner. The bed size is pretty quick to sew for such a large quilt and it would look so classic and elegant in any bedroom.

THE INSPIRATION

Boxlink is inspired by weaving. I’ve always been drawn to textiles and the way threads are woven together to make cloth. Warp and weft and over and under to create the most amazing designs! Boxlink is a celebration of this incredible art.

DESIGN OPTIONS

You have a choice in how you arrange the Boxlink blocks. You can scatter the different coloured blocks throughout or you can arrange them in matching rows. Both options look really great! If suing the scatter method, it is possible to only have one of each colour in each row and column (I call this Sudoku Style).

I opted to scatter the blocks for the throw quilt sample and do rows for the baby quilt. Regardless of the layout you choose, the cornerstones are scattered at random. If you would prefer to have all matching cornerstones, that is possible, too! You just need to get a little extra fabric to cut them out.

STRIP PIECING

The concept of ‘strip piecing’ might be new to you. It’s exactly as it sounds and it's a lot of fun! You piece strips of fabric together to create long units that can be subcut into smaller pieces. This saves time and increases the accuracy of the final cuts. The Boxlink blocks are all constructed using strip piecing and it makes this quilt pattern a quick sew!

CHOOSING FABRIC

Boxlink works well with Fat Quarter or Half Yard cuts. It makes it really easy to get a bundle of fabrics that go well together and start sewing! The baby and lap sizes also work with yardage, FQs are not required. You select a complimentary fabric for the background and the sashing.

I used two Fableism lines for the cover quilts. The large throw is made from the Nocturne Chambray collection. These fabrics have an almost iridescent quality and the colours are so rich. The baby quilt is made from Sprout Wovens - the most cozy woven fabrics with the cutest little Xs on them!

THE QUILTING

Thanks to Shelly over at Ma Tante quilting for longarming the large throw cover quilt. I chose “cross” for the pantograph and I love the result. It really mimics the blocks well.

I used a fabric from the Fableism Monarch Grove collection for the backing on the large throw. This fabric is called “Moonless”. I love how the weaving mimics the blocks in the quilt!

The baby quilt backing is pieced from several leftover ¼ yard cuts of Sprout Wovens I had on hand. I quilted this sample myself, doing simple horizontal lines of stitching in the middle of each 2” strip.
